The vineyards of Sangiovese Grosso and Merlot were planted in the property over 250 years ago. The same clones are still present in our historical vineyards of Sangiovese Grosso and Merlot that are over 65 years old now. From the 20 ha of old vineyards the property has grown to 80 hectares.
The new plants are the result of breeding older clones and adding grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano, Syrah, planted after extensive studies of soil and microclimate conditions and a careful clonal selections under the supervision of Dr. Franco Bernabei.
The plantation of new vineyards is 2.2 by 0.80 meters (for a density of about 5800 plants per hectare) to cordon. The breeding of vineyards provides a very short pruning (8-10 buds per plant), a rigorous selection of the shoots, green harvesting, thinning and grape selection, spring ligatures to obtain a pattern of upright branches.
Yields per hectare are kept very low (depending on the different varieties) in order to preserve the quality of all our wines and, generalizing a bit, it can be summarized in the equation a plant corresponds a bottle. The vines are: Sangiovese Grosso, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon , Montepulciano, Syrah, white varieties are Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Grechetto. Current production is about 500,000 bottles a year.
